Can a Blue Ox Tow Bar Attach to a Roadmaster Base Plate

Topic: Blue Ox vs. Roadmaster
Posted By: brooksrimes on 04/07/03 08:45am Blue Ox & Roadmaster both make tow bars and brackets. Are there other companies?

What are the pros and cons of these brands?

We plan to tow our 97 Camry behind a Class A. (We do know about the Remco lube pump and Brake Buddy [emoticon]

Thanks for any advice.

Generally, I prefer Blue Ox base plates and Roadmaster tow bars. The Blue Ox have the cross members behind the grill (generally) and are strong enough that no added cross member is needed.
But those Roadmaster tow bars are pretty nice.

I just got a quote from a local MH dealer for a Sterling tow bar, XL base plate for an 04 Jeep GC with cables and wiring all ready to go.

He quoted $1320 installed.

Does that sound about right.

Posted By: Ames on 04/08/03 06:36am We had a Blue Ox Alladin and had 5 years of excellent service and support. When we purchased our 02 Ford Explorer Sport Trac they reccomended the Adventa II which and traded me for $100 plus shipping one way ($20.00).

We are going to stick to Blue Ox Products but you will probably be just as well off with Roadmaster.

Posted By: summersr on 04/08/03 08:25am Went with BlueOx. Liked the easy way the tow bar adapters insert into the baseplate and the baseplate is almost invisible when the adapters are removed. My CR-V baseplate is held on with 8 bolts and is not going anywhere.

Roadmaster seems to have the in with CampingWorld and other RV centers in my area. There is only 1 dealer (Evergreen RV) in Seattle.

Posted By: sigthor on 04/08/03 07:38pm Went with the Blue Ox system. At the time, they were the only ones making a baseplate for the 2003 Saturn L200. Have the Adventa II tow bar. New weight rating of 10000 lbs. Originally was going to purchase Roadmaster with adapters for the Blue Ox baseplate. Then I got a price on the Blue Ox that beat Roadmaster. Both are excellent systems.

Posted By: JoeG on 04/08/03 09:48pm I went with the Roadmaster Sterling Tow Bar with the optional 6-wire cable. This allows both the TOAD lighting and brakeing wires to run in a single cable and plug into a single socket. I have a Unified Tow Brake on my Jeep and it only requires two wires from the motorhome.

I also installed Roadmaster Base Plates on my 2002 Jeep Wrangler. The base plates are nearly invisible when the cross-bar is not in place.

Nice hardware and I strongly recommend Roadmaster. I towed to Alaska and back this past summer with zero towing problems.

The Blue Ox and Roadmaster tow bars are a push along with Demco. I happened to go with a Blue Ox baseplate, Aladdin bar, Remco 4-wire light/diode kit because the package price was right and I believed the story about Blue Ox baseplates fitting my car better.

Both are quality products, I'm sure.

Posted By: ghostrek on 04/10/03 09:16pm We started with a Roadmaster bracket kit and Falcon 5250 towbar. We received a Blue Ox Alladin towbar for free when we bought our DP last year as part of a dealer promotion. I like the aluminum Alladin better since it has covers over the rams.

Next Friday we are have the Roadmaster bracket kit removed and the Blue Ox base plate installed. It only took me one time to see my Boss' Blue Ox set up compared to my Roadmaster set up. The Blue Ox is definitely better, quicker and easier to mess with.

Posted By: Cdn RV Tech on 04/11/03 12:25pm We are a dealer for both products. I sell Blue Ox and Roadmaster as both products have advantages on particular vehicles. For example, the Roadmaster baseplate on an Acura MDX is awful, where the blue ox is much nicer, but the blue ox baseplate installation on a Malibu is three times the installation time as compared to the roadmaster. On a Camry...last one I did was a Roadmaster and I remember the install to be very clean I looked up the blue ox baseplate and it seems simple to install but you do have to remove the bumper completely. Tow bar... my personal favorite is the Sterling by Roadmaster, but it is more expensive.
Posted By: Phillerup on 04/13/03 11:49am I do not own a Blue Ox so I cannot really say about them. But, I own and use a Roadmaster Sterling bar a lot and do know about it. The Sterling is light weight and stays with the RV. The Roadmaster hidden brackets installed without drilling and I installed myself in about 4 hours. The Sterling has a shock absorber built in the bar. The Sterling purchase included the safety cables and wiring. The Sterling has a channel built into the bar for wiring and safety cable that keeps you from having to wrap and tangle the wiring around the outside of the bar and proytects the wiring. The Sterling unhooks and hooks up very easy. My wife has hooked it up by herself several times. The only drawback was the cost. I finally caught it on sale and used a coupon at CW to get it.

Posted By: jolooote on 08/18/03 11:03pm I have the RoadMaster 'Sterling' and Demco 'Bracket' for my 03 Honda 'Element'. Demco bracket is $100 cheaper. U have to order the Sterling or any RoadMaster tow bar with the 'Adapter' ends to fit the Demco, about $30. This setup allows u to connect the tow bar 'Directly' to the bracket without the use of the
'Quick Disconnect'(QD) bar thats normally used with RoadMaster tow bars.
Saves about 40 Lbs of weight and about 4 bolted or Pinned junction points on the Quick disconnect bar. Less stuff to worry about failing. I'm not sure if u can get a RoadMaster tow bar without also buying the QD bar, although I've seen just the QD bar for sell at RV stores for $125 alone.
I've never understood the idea behind RoadMaster's QD bar. The Sterling & others are designed to stay on the rear of the Motorhome when parked. But, that leaves this big ugly QD bar on the front of u'r Toad??? U either have to drive around with it hanging on the front of the Toad or REMOVE it and store it somewhere! Seems to me this does away with the idea of a tow bar that stays with the Motorhome?????

Posted By: Banandangees on 08/19/03 12:02pm I have dedided to go with the Blue Ox. I suppose the local price/installation cost was one thing that discouraged me; the other was the quick disconnect (QD) or "cross bar on the Roadmaster."

I was at the FMCA rally outside Buffalo in July and got a "rally quote" from Blue Ox for an "Aventa II", base plate for my 04 Jeep GC and the wiring kit, elec. cables, safety cables and cover. A local 5th wheel/trailer dealer will install it.

What I thought was interesting was when I call Blue Ox in Pender, Nebraska to confirm order, the salsman checked his inventory and said that they were out of stock on the Aventa Ii but that one would be made up and set out on late next week??? How big a company is Blue Ox? When I toured the Newmar plant in Nappanee, IN, the tour guide said that they don't build ahead, they build only on order. But, that is a motorhome company. Didn't know they did that for tow bars [emoticon])

Posted By: Golden_HVAC on 08/20/03 12:00am I have a Roadmaster. It works great, but use padlocks instead of the pins to keep everything in place.

I tow a Honda CRV with 4 WD, auto trans and everything works great. No modifications to the car except a diode kit to make the turn signals from the motorhome activate the car left & right lights in back. I also added a cruise control motor to the brake pedal. I ran a vaccume hose from the motorhome engine to the brake booster on the car, then hooked up a solinoid to the brake +12 VDC line, to apply full vaccume to the cruse control motor. This pulls the cable in, pulling the brake pedal towards the floor. Works great, for about $25.

Good Luck, Fred.

Posted By: ghostrek on 08/20/03 12:27pm We started with a Roadmaster baseplate and towbar (Falcon 5250). We bought our Jeep Liberty when they first came out. Roadmaster was the first of three companies (Roadmaster, Blue OX and Demco) to manufacture a baseplate to fit the Liberty. We had to hold up a vacation one day until they could finish manufacturing and overnight to our installer.

We used the Roadmaster system for two years and had no problems. The steel Falcon 5350 is a little heavy. I also got tired of installing the crossbar bracket on the front of the Jeep everytime we went to tow the Jeep. We would take it off and store it in the RV's basement when not towing since it looked like crap. Roadmaster does not show the crossbar in the pictures on their web site and does not mention it either.

We bought a new diesel pusher in February 2002. Our dealer gave us a free aluminum Blue Ox Alladin towbar. I bought some adapters from Blue Ox to make the Blue Ox towbar hook up to the Roadmaster crossbar bracket. The aluminum towbar is much lighter and I like that Blue Ox has a cover over their Rams to keep them clean. We still had the pain of installing and removing the crossbar. It also takes 7 locks to lock all the pinned locations (including the receiver) when using the quick disconnect system.

I bought a new Blue Ox base plate before this camping season. I had my installer remove the Roadmaster baseplate and install the Blue Ox baseplate. The Blue Ox baseplate also has a crossbar, but it is built in semi-permanent and hidden underneath the front end where it is not seen. There is just three pin locations including the receiver, which allowed us to buy and use the Blue Ox 3 lock pins. The Blue Ox system is much easier and quicker to get hooked up and to unhook. My Wife can't believe how quick it is now for me to hook us up or unhook.

In summary, I believe that the Blue Ox system is the best way to go.

Posted By: kirkjrk on 08/21/03 05:40pm I got a quote today almost similar to yours + or - $5.00 of the $1320 you received, however it was for the Roadmaster Falcon 2--probably a less expensive tow bar than the Stering.
Posted By: summersr on 08/21/03 06:37pm Blue Ox has fantastic customer service. Call them up or email them and they will respond imediately. Wanted to replace a plastic plug that was starting to look bad. No Problem...How many do you want... Will be FedEx'd today...
Posted By: Phillerup on 08/21/03 07:03pm Just traded the Jeep tow for a 2004 Jeep GC model. Old hidden bracket would not fit new Jeep. Go Figure the luck. Just ordered new Roadmaster bracket from CW for $296 + shipping. BTW I believe $1320 is too high, but I am not sure about labor pricing where you live. I bought the Sterling bar for about $575 if memory serves and the bracket for about $275 sometime back and installed myself in about 4 hours while taking breaks. The bar is aluminum and lightweight. It is also rated at 6000 lbs. My Jeep is about 4000 lbs.

Posted By: Deen on 08/25/03 12:06am Beings that Roadmaster is about 15 miles from home I went with the complete setup, including the Brakemaster. I got the new Sterling bar off the internet for $505.00, the accessory kit for 170.00 and XL brackets from CW (can't remember the price). Installed everything myself. Took several days due to short working hours and lack of necessity for doing it quicker. Since the picture below was taken I've added a hi-low adapter to level the bars out.
Posted By: Banandangees on 08/22/03 07:00am Blue Ox Aventa II came via Fedex this morning [emoticon]). The Aventa II, base plate for a 04 Jeep GC, safety cables, electric cables, wiring kit (6 wire) and cover were shipped for $924.30. Blue Ox said it would probably cost between $150 and $300 to have it installed, depending on local rates. So, a total cost would be between $1074 and $1224 installed.

The aluminum "Aladdin" (equivalent of the Roadmaster Sterling) would have cost another $200.
